One of the most important things a business looking to grow successfully needs is data. Data is important because it helps you know what’s working and where potential opportunities or pitfalls may exist.

For a business that has a website, a perfect tool for this is Google Analytics. Understanding the importance of this, we’ve made it possible for business owners with Bumpa websites to set up Google Analytics on their websites and start gathering and tracking important data for their business.

In this article, we’ll run through the importance of Google Analytics, how it works and finally, how to set it for your Bumpa website.

What is Google Analytics?

What is Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is a free web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. Here's what it does:

  1. Tracks visitors: It shows you how many people visit your website, where they come from (like Google search, social media, or direct visits), and what devices they use.

  2. Analyses behavior: It tells you which pages people view, how long they stay, and what actions they take on your site.

  3. Measures conversions: It helps you track when visitors complete important actions like making purchases, signing up for newsletters, or filling out contact forms.

  4. Provides reports: It organises all this data into reports and dashboards so you can understand how your website is performing.

  5. Offers insights: It helps you understand your audience better so you can make informed decisions about your website and business.

Business owners use Google Analytics to see if their website is working effectively, understand their customers better, and make data-driven decisions to improve their online presence.

Why You Need Google Analytics

Google Analytics is perfect for knowing who’s visiting your website, how they found you, what products they look at, whether they buy anything or if they come back. This can help you with things like what products to market or run sales on, how to stock your items, where to channel more marketing efforts, and more. And the best part? It's FREE!

  • Click "Start measuring"

  • Enter an account name (like "My Bumpa Business")

  • Scroll down and click "Next"

  • Fill in your account details and click the checkboxes for data sharing settings

Step 2: Set Up Your Property

A "property" is just what Google calls your website in their system.

  1. Name your property (usually your business name)

  2. Select your time zone and currency (so your reports match your business)

  3. Click "Next"

  4. Answer the business information questions

  5. Click "Create"

Great job! Now for the data stream:

Step 3: Create Your Data Stream

Data streams tell Google Analytics where to collect data from:

  1. Select "Web" as your platform

  2. Enter your website URL (make sure to include https://)

  3. Give your stream a name (can be the same as your website)

  4. Click "Create stream"

You'll now see a Measurement ID that looks something like G-XXXXXXXXXX. This is SUPER important! Write it down or copy it - you'll need it for the next step.

Step 5: Check That Everything's Working

Google Analytics data may not start appearing for a few hours, but here’s how to check if your setup is working properly:

  1. Go back to Google Analytics

  2. Click on "Reports" in the left menu

  3. Click on "Realtime"

  4. Open your website in another tab

  5. Refresh the Realtime report

Behavior Reports

See which pages people visit most and how long they stay. This shows you what products or content your visitors find interesting.

Conversion Reports

Track who's buying and who's just browsing. This helps you understand your sales funnel and improve it.
